The Newark Rotary Club Foundation

 

All members of the Newark Rotary Club are members of the Newark Rotary Club Foundation.

The Newark Rotary Club Foundation was incorporated in 1988 by the Secretary of the State of Ohio, and is qualified as a charitable, not-for-profit organization under Section 501 (c) (3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code.  As such, gifts to the Newark Rotary Club Foundation are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

As provided in the Foundation's Code of Regulations, a seven-member Board of Trustees conducts the regular business of the Foundation.  Five of the Trustees are elected annually by the members.  Two Trustees (the current president and the president-elect of the Newark Rotary Club) serve as ex-officio, voting members.

The five elected trustees are:

  • Glenn F. Abel (president)
  • Paul Barnes, DDS
  • Jack Oberfield (treasurer)
  • Cheryl Snyder
  • John Weaver (vice president)

In addition, Tom Marcelain and Mike Messaro are ex-officio voting members and Gib Reese (secretary) serves as an ex-officio non voting member.

The Newark Rotary Club Foundation board of Trustees met five times during the past Rotary year (2003-2004) to carry out the business and to promote the goals of the Foundation.  The Foundation directs its interest, its emphasis, and its giving in three broad areas, as follows:

  1. Education
  2. Children with special needs
  3. The advancement and perpetuation of the American Free Enterprise system.  During the year the Trustees made 15 awards ranging from $150.00 to $5,000.00.  The total of all awards for the year was $30,310.00.  For the year 2004 - 2005 the Foundation has awarded over $9,000.00.  The Foundation also has pledged to provide $50,000.00 over a three-year period for the Newark Rotary "Accessible Playground" project.

Past Past recipients of Foundation grants include, Scholarhips for OSU and COTC Newark, Oar Excellence School, Newark Schools, Ohio Business Week, The Works, The Midland Theater, Marietta Community Foundation, Salvation Army, Junior Achievement, BCAC Career Fair, HOBY Leadership program, Land of Legend Philharmonic Orchestra, and numerous Newark Rotary projects such as Camp Enterprise and Read With Me.

Funding for the Foundation comes from individual contributions made payable to the Newark Rotary Foundation and the annual Newark Rotary  Auction.
